Born in Hastings in 1935, Shirley was fasinated by folk songs as she was growing up, songs she heard on the radio or sung by her grandparents. She left home for London to immerse herself in the burgeoning folk scene, later touring the US recording American folk songs and blues. Shirley cemented her role at the forefront of the Folk Revival, recording over a dozen albums including the influential 'Folk Roots, New Routes' before losing her voice in the 80's.38 years later she returns with a new album 'Lodestar', which has been hailed as her best ever work. The word legend can be used too lightly. In the case of this peerless collector and interpreter of songs it barely seems sufficient.
