Cork Folk Festival 28th Sept-1st October 2017
Cork, Ireland’s southern capital once again will host a spectacular line up of gifted musicians. The festival happens in all of the city’s finest venues including the Everyman Palace and Triskel Christchurch. The line up will feature Donovan a legendary songwriter from 60’s to the newest bands on the scene like Torcán from Cork and Na Mooneys from Donegal.
In 2016 ‘The Lonely Planet’ described the 38th year old festival as, ‘Pulling pub backrooms and grand old theatres into service for fruitful traditional music that ranges from the foot-stomping to the hushed.’
The Everyman Palace will definitely be hushed for the 1st appearance at the Cork festival by folk troubadour, DONOVAN. Donovan Leitch burst onto the musical scene in 1965 with the folk songs “Catch the Wind” and “Colours”.
Another troubadour to make an appearance at this year’s festival will be, Andy Irvine, formerly of Planxty & Sweeney’s Men, Andy is a member of Mozaik, and Usher’s Island along with Donal Lunny. He has played & recorded with Paul Brady, Christy Moore, Bill Whelan and Davy Spillane, and shared the bill in Dublin with Billy Bragg, celebrating the Woody Guthrie Centenary. Andy will be joined at his concert with sisters Tríona & Maighread Ní Dhomhnaill from Kells, County Meath.
The festival also includes no less than four trios of Ireland’s finest and revered musicians in concert, Steve Cooney (guitar), Dermot Byrnes (box) & Bríd Harper (fiddle), Mick Daly (guitar), Jarlath Henderson (pipes), Cathy Jordan (song) and ), Colm Murphy (bodhrán), Sean Ryan (whistle) & Brendan Begley (box)and Máire Ní Chathasaigh(fiddle), Nollaig Casey (Fiddle) and Mairéad Ní Chathasaigh (harp).
Fans of Rory Gallagher will be treated to a concert with his onetime favourite fiddle player Joe O’ Donnell (East of Eden, Mushroom, The Woods Band, Granny's Intentions & Thin Lizzy) , Joe will be bring his six piece band Shkayla to play a concert at the Everyman Palace.
The line up continues with Matt Cranitch (Fiddle) & Jackie Daly (box) will feature once again along with a new trad band, Granny's Attic from Coventry plus Mary McNamara (concertina) & Sorcha MacNamara (fiddle). A very special reunion concert with 1980’s Cork trad band, Geanntrai. Other concerts include one to honour of Seamus Creagh, plus concerts with the Cork Pipers Club, Lee Delta Blues Club, John Leo Carter and instrument concerts in Fiddle, Pipes, Flute, and Accordion, Concerting & Song. There will be a song contest in honour of Noel Brazil featuring many prizes including a tour of Sweden and a Céilí Mór on Céilí Band on Grand Parade.
