THREE TRAPPED TIGERS
Three Trapped Tigers are a band for which genres and labels struggle to keep up; they move at breakneck speed from screeching, effect-laden guitars, an arsenal of glistening sci-fi synths, pummelling sub-bass, colossal riffs and audacious drum patterns that both underpin and define their unique sound.
The trio from London, UK, consisting of Adam Betts (drums), Matt Calvert (guitar and synths) and Tom Rogerson (keys) have been cultivating a cult following in the UK and across Europe with their unique brand of instrumental rock since a string of EPs (EP - 2008, EP 2 - 2009, EP3 - 2010) and their critically acclaimed debut album ‘Route One Or Die’ in 2011. Having made fans of Chino Moreno and Brian Eno along the way, 2016 saw the release of their long-awaited sophomore ‘Silent Earthling’.
The group worked with Brian Eno and Karl Hyde of Underworld, using Brian’s ‘Oblique Strategies’ during the writing stages of they latest album ‘Silent Earthling’, something that proved an invaluable way of forcing the group out of their comfort zones.
Calvert and Betts also currently form the backbone of The Heritage Orchestra who consistently approach one ambitious project after the next, ranging from collaborations with Goldie, Bjork, Giorgio Moroder, re-imaging Joy Division and the Bladerunner Soundtrack and many more. Keys player Tom Rogerson has even taken the Eno connection to the next level and a collaborative album with Brian Eno is due later this year.
As anyone who has seen their incendiary live shows will know, trying to pinpoint what makes the group such a force is a difficult thing to do. On stage they are something of a vortex, creating a swirling mass of layered sounds that suck the audience in, possessing that rare ability of managing to sound complex and fluid whilst eschewing any feelings of pomposity or sterility - in full force Three Trapped Tigers feel both gracefully intelligent and wildly primal, gargantuan yet beautifully melodic.
