Featuring The Mary Stokes Band, The Grainne Duffy Band & The Bree Harris Band
The Mary Stokes Band:
The queen of Howth Roots and Blues, Mary Stokes has performed at the festival every year since its inception and the crowds coming to see her continuously grow. When it comes to American Blues Harmonic Players, her partner in crime Brian Palm is the original of the species and worth the trip alone just to hear his exquisite tones.
This year Mary and Brian have stripped things back to the original 5 piece, no nonsense, Chicago Blues sound as they bring their “Mean Old World” Tour to Howth and beyond. The Band also includes the sensational guitar player Sarah Michelle, with powerhouse rhythm section Zamo Riffman on Bass and Jay Oglesby on Drums.
The Grainne Duffy Band:
Grainne Duffy was born in Castleblayney, Co. Monaghan, Ireland and raised in a family of seven. As a schoolgirl she sang in her local choir and also in a family band with her sisters. The band was bred from their love of music, which Duffy accredits to her mother. Not having a television in their home when they were young, her mother instead allowed them to own a family record player, on which they all were encouraged to get a record on their individual birthday’s and Christmas.
This broadened their interest in music and they began listening to artists such as Aretha Franklin, The Pretenders and The Rolling Stones. Around that time Grainne discovered Fleetwood Mac and the blues playing of Peter Green, whom she cites as one her main guitar influences. Previous to her solo career Grainne Duffy obtained a degree in music at NUI, Maynooth, Ireland and took part in session work singing with various bands across Italy and France.
The Bree Harris Band:
Bree Harris has been playing the Dublin circuit for some time now. Playing a programme of Blues, Rock, Folk and Soul interspersed with her own original material. She has delighted audiences with her renditions of artistes such as Tony Joe White, Leonard Cohen, Bonnie Raitt, John Prine and Bob Dylan. With her powerful voice exuding raw energy and emotion accompanied by some of Ireland's finest musicians, she is a force to be reckoned with.
